About

Changes to the Occupational Course of Study (OCS) program.

Why is the OCS Curriculum changing?

A Federal Title II Audit in 2008 found that the OCS program did not meet NCLB regulations as curriculum was not closely aligned to the Standard Course of Study and EC teachers were not highly qualified to teach English, Social Studies, Math and Science.

What changes will occur?

OCS students will begin this fall with a new curriculum that is aligned with the new Essential Standards. (http://www.ncpublicschools.org/acre/standards/)

All OCS English, Math, Science and Social Studies curriculum must now be taught by a highly qualified teacher in the core areas.

Until new EXTEND2 tests are developed for the new courses (2012-2013), OCS students will take the regular English I, Algebra I, and Biology EOC exams.

OCS Inclusion Model

The OCS students will be enrolled in core general ed classes.
The general ed teacher would be dually assigned as both the SCOS as well as the OCS Essential Standards.
Curriculum Assistance could be used to provide additional curriculum support while students are enrolled in core courses by the OCS teacher.
The OCS teachers could act as the inclusion teacher where OCS students are placed.
OCS Teacher Assistants can also be utilized in the general ed classes to assist OCS students.
