Objectives for English 3

The learner will
• demonstrate increasing insight and reflection to print and non-print text through personal expression.
• inform an audience by using a variety of media to research and explain insights into language and culture.
• examine argumentation and develop informed opinions.
• critically analyze text to gain meaning, develop thematic connections, and synthesize ideas.

• interpret and evaluate representative texts to deepen understanding of literature of the United States.
• apply conventions of grammar and language usage.

NC Graduation Project Research Paper
You will write an eight to ten page research paper on a topic of your choice (subject to approval). The paper will count as an exam grade and will be a component of your NC Graduation Project Portfolio. Therefore, this research paper is a graduation requirement. Don’t treat it lightly!

You will be provided with numerous hours in the computer lab to research and write your paper. If you need additional time, you may stay after-school or work on a home computer.

Novel Project
Over the course of the semester, you will independently read and complete a project on an American novel. More details on each project will be given as the semester progresses. I will provide a list from which you may choose your novel. If you wish to read a novel not on the list, you must submit the title for teacher approval.

Bellringer
Most classes will begin with a journal entry or a grammar lesson. When the bell rings, you should be in your seat and begin completing the assignment. What you miss because you are tardy or slack, you can complete for homework - or receive a zero.

Daily assignments

My class is mostly project-based learning. This means that you will research and learn material to create a product sharing what you learned. Enough class time will allow you to complete every project (IF you use your time wisely). Each assignment will be posted on our interactive website: nrhs.edu20.org.

If you are absent, IT IS UP TO YOU to look on the nrhs.edu20 site to find out what you missed.

Every assignment must be made up or you will earn a zero.

Laptops and computer lab

First, and most important, absolutely NO candy, food or drinks anywhere near our laptops, as well as when we are in the computer lab. Second, computer time is limited to our class activities. DO NOT venture off to any websites that are not directly related to what we are learning in class. Every website you visit is accessible to the school system. If you pass the proxies and access websites that are not school-related, then you may be locked off from logging into your account anymore. This can be done without you knowing until the next time you try to log on. When this happens, you can't follow the class assignments on the nrhs.edu20 website, and you can't open up your documents to add to your research paper.

I have unlimited access to check behind you in everything you do on the school computers. DO NOT use my class time to update your status on facebook (or any other cite that is not assigned). If you are caught on a website that is not a part of our class assignment, then you will be punished according to my behavior plan:

1st time - Warning

2nd time - Student-teacher conference

3rd time - 30 minutes after school

4th time - parent contact

5th time - WRITE UP

IPODS

It is a requirement at North Rowan that teachers utilize the IPODs in class every day.

Therefore, it is important for your child to have an IPOD in class every day.
